World War II drama "Atonement" emerged as the front-runner from a crowded field of Golden Globes contenders, scooping seven nominations for the Hollywood awards show traditionally regarded as a key indicator for the Oscars.

The critically acclaimed adaptation of author Ian McEwan's best-selling novel earned nominations for best drama, best director and won nods for British stars James McAvoy and Keira Knightley in the acting categories.

Director Tim Burton's dark re-telling of Broadway musical "Sweeney Todd" earned four nominations, including best musical and best director.

The film's stars Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter both earned nominations in the musical acting categories.

Bonham-Carter's rivals for the musical acting honor include France's Marion Cotillard, who is regarded as the overwhelming favorite to take the prize for her portrayal of tragic chanteuse Edith Piaf in "La Vie En Rose."

Another French film, "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly", also fared well picking up three nominations, including best director (Julian Schnabel) and best foreign-language film.

Other nominees in the foreign-language category included Romania's Cannes Palm D'Or winner "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days," "The Kite Runner," Ang Lee's "Lust Caution" and French epic "Persepolis."

In an unusual step, Golden Globes organizers named seven films instead of the usual five in the best motion picture drama category.

Founded in October 1943 by eight foreign journalists, the organization was originally called the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association. The first awards ceremony was held during a luncheon at 20th Century Fox, where the winners in five categories—Best Motion Picture, Best Actor and Actress, and Best supporting Actor and Actress—received scrolls, with "The Song of Bernadette" winning the top prize. The next year the ceremony was held at the Beverly Hills Hotel, but the fledgling group's funds were so tight that Joan Bennett's gardener was tapped to supply the flowers for the tables. The actual Golden Globe award came about in 1946, when association president Marina Cisternas came up with the idea of using a statuette of a "golden globe" with a filmstrip circling it.

The HFPA is currently celebrating its 65th anniversary in Hollywood. Today the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association represent some 55 countries with a combined readership of more than 250 million. Their publications include leading newspapers and magazines in Europe, Asia, Australasia and Latin America, ranging from the Daily Telegraph in England to Le Figaro in France, L'Espresso in Italy and Vogue in Germany as well as the China Times and the pan-Arabic magazine Kul Al Osra.

Each year HFPA members interview more than 250 actors, directors, writers and producers, as well as reporting from film sets and seeing more than 300 films. Members also attend film festivals in other countries in order to seek out interesting and innovative foreign language films and establish cultural bonds with directors, actors, jurors and fellow journalists around the world.

Membership meetings are held monthly and the officers and directors are elected annually. A maximum of five journalists are admitted to the organization each year. All members are accredited by the Motion Picture Association of America.
