Three of Us: synopsis

Three of Us : Cinematography by Shariqua Badar Khan

Three of Us is the moving tale of the indomitable human spirit. It is the true story of forty-year old Yogendra who is severely disabled since birth. His ageing parents who have looked after him for four decades are now frail and wrinkled and worried sick about their son’s future. Yet the brave trio faces life resolutely and cheerfully. Yogendra still smiles at the mirror after giving himself a shave and how! His mother still delights in watching her son dance and his father stoically cycles down dark alleys to deliver newspapers to make ends meet.

The film takes a frank look at their lives and underscores how matter-of-factly these courageous people are leading their lives. Three of Us encapsulates their struggle for existence from one dawn to the next and is a lesson for everyone in the forgotten art of living.

The whole team of 'Three of Us' was on the moon when they read the letter from Berlin saying "It is our great pleasure to invite Three Of Us to the Official
Programme of the section Berlinale Shorts of the 58th Berlin International Film Festival" says  a  jubilant Shariqua.

Talking of her experience she adds "We were confined to a small room where if we wanted to place the tripod, we had to move the TV, fridge, bed.. It is hard to imagine how three mighty lives could be ensconced in such a small place and how accommodating they were despite our turning their world topsy-turvy.

"At the beginning and end of every shooting day, we "shook hands" with Yogendra who happily grabbed them with his feet. His feats with feet were numerous and a lesson in optimism,"  says the young cinematographer with emotions.

In 2007, Shariqua did photography for an award-winning film directed by Ganesh Gaikwad. The film, a 24-minute documentary shot in India and London, won Swarna Kamal (Gold Lotus) for Best Direction at the 53rd National Film Awards of India. 'Voices Across the Ocean' centres on the images an adolescent conjures up while listening to BBC Hindi Service and how his perceptions of London meet with the reality of being there.

The film was commissioned and financed by UK's One World Trust under its Student Bursary Scheme.

Again, as a part of her diploma course, Shariqua Badar Khan directed a film 'Beneath a Whistling Train' which was selected for a screening at the British Council Digital Films Festival in New Delhi.

'Beneath a Whistling Train', 6 minutes 22 seconds/DV, by Shariqua Badar Khan is an attempt to answer a sad but beautiful question asked by the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda - ‘how long does a man spend dying’? It is the story of a young man on the verge of committing suicide under his favourite train in the company of his favourite poet.
