Normally, the UK box office figures are available on Wednesdays by the UK Film Council, sourcing it to EDI Neilson. The Indian distribution system for feature films is perhaps the most archaic and complex systems in the world. The country got its independence from British in 1947, but the distribution system even today represents a pre- independence map of India. The areas of distribution are called territories, and they represent states which do not exist any more such as CP Berar, CI, Nizam and Mysore etc.

However, with the construction of  multiplexes in big cities, sales figures in certains parts of the country can be made available easily. But to come up with an authentic chart for the whole country remains a task till date. We reproduce a chart published by Box Office India, a respected organisation in compiling box office figures for feature films. All figures are in Rupees.

Box Office figures for India say 2006 was a glorious year for Bollywood's commercial successes. Top 25 films deliver gross collections of about Rs 620 crore, a 26% increase over 2005.
